Here are 10 suggestions to help you improve your wireless signal at home. If you have issues with weak signals or frequent disconnections, try some of the following suggestions. If you have no issues, try to avoid messing around with any of your settings.
1. Position your router in a central location.
If your house is 3 levels, place the router on the middle/main floor. This will guarantee good signals to the lower level, upper level, as well as the main level.
2. Make sure router is elevated off ground and is not near any metal objects.
Flooring, walls, and metal objects interfere with your wireless signals. Try to place the router in a room or location that has minimal metal.
3. Add a wireless repeater.
A wireless repeater was created to extend the range of your wireless signal. If you find that signal is weak in a certain location of your house, the wireless repeater will boost that signal for you.
4. Change your wireless channel.
By default most people use channel 6. If you live in an area with plenty of wireless networks around, change the channel to something different, such as 3 or 5.
5. Avoid 2.4GHz electronics.
Your router uses the 2.4GHz frequency to transmit signals. Some telephones also use this frequency which could interfere with your signal. Look for phones that use 900MHz or 5.8GHz frequencies instead.
6. Update your adapters firmware.
Find out your brand/model of your router and visit the manufacturers website to see if you are up to date with the latest firmware.
7. Use Powerline Network Adapters.
A fairly new piece of hardware – Powerline Network Adapters – aim to increase wireless range. As long as you have a power outlet close by, you can use a Powerline adapter to connect your computer to your network using a direct connection. This technology is still fairly expensive so it should be used as one of your last resorts.
8. Upgrade to Wireless N.
The time for Wireless B & G are passing. Now, you can get a Wireless N router which is much faster than a Wireless G router (and even faster than Wireless B) for under $30. This will improve your signal strength and improve your range.
9. Try a different adapter/location.
If nothing above worked, perhaps the issue is the wireless adapter. Before you go out and purchase a new one, try using it at a friends house to rule out the possibility.
10. Replace your routers antenna (last resort).
If nothing above works, chances are your antenna is worn out. Look online for a cheap replacement.

“use a powerline adapter to connect wirelessly to your network using a direct connection ethernet cable.”
So I’m using a wire to wirelessly connect to the network?
Yes, that is exactly right. You need 2 powerline adapters.
Basically how a powerline adapter works is you connect one end of an ethernet wire to your router, and another end to the powerline adapter. Then you plug in the adapter into the wall for power. Then take your second powerline adapter, plug it into a power slot in the room you want to get wireless in. Then take another ethernet cable, connect to powerline adapter in that room, and connect the other end to your laptop/desktop’s ethernet slot.
If anyone else is confused, let me know and I could make an article on how to setup powerline adapters and how they work.
Hope this helps!
Are you sure it works through wireless and it’s not just a power line network implementation?
To get good speed, you need to buy a pair and transmit signal between them. For that price, its better to upgrade your router.
Well, they do access the internet wirelessly, but have better connection that pure wireless because of the ethernet connectivity.
They are quite expensive, but if you look online, you sometimes find a pair of them for ~$50, which isn’t too bad.
Do you have a link to one that you’ve seen?
I actually own one, but I will have to look for the link again.
I also recall seeing re-certified ones at TigerDirect for $49.99
The ones I found on Tiger Direct’s site which fit the description you gave are powerline network adapters.
Yes, I was referring to something like this: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5685079&CatId=211
Looks like they removed the deal for 2 for $49.99
Alright so it IS a wired solution not wireless.
Actually powerline is technically considered a wireless solution, since you do not run a wire literally from your router to the computer, and can be used anywhere in the house that has a power outlet.
